2 gennaio – Si fondono le borse di San Francisco e Los Angeles.

25 marzo – A Roma, sei Paesi europei (Italia, Francia, Germania, Belgio, Olanda, Lussemburgo) firmano il “Trattato di Roma”, atto istitutivo delle Comunità Economica Europea (CEE) e Comunità Europea dell’Energia Atomica (EURATOM)

Aprile – Esce On the road, di Jack Kerouac.

13 aprile – A Milano apre il primo punto di grande distribuzione organizzata (supermarket).
L’Egitto riapre il Canale di Suez.
In Italia esce il romanzo di Boris Pasternak Il dottor Zivago.

Tra giugno e novembre Pasolini e Sanguineti si scontrano sulle pagine di due fascicoli della rivista “Officina”. L’evento determina una frattura verticale e l’avviamento del loop della poesia contemporanea. Per l’anagrafe poetica il Paese cambia legittimamente il proprio nome in Ytalya. Il calendario si blocca e – sempre in poesia – da ora in poi dopo ogni 31 dicembre l’anno ricomincia sempre come 1 gennaio 1957.

4 luglio – Viene presentata la Fiat 500.

25 agosto – Muore Umberto Saba.

4 ottobre – L’Unione Sovietica lancia nello spazio lo Sputnik 1, primo satellite artificiale della storia, seguito il 3 novembre dallo Sputnik 2, con a bordo la cagnetta Laika.

1 novembre – Muore Clemente Rebora.
