For a second time this year Israeli settler mobs, escorted and defended by the Israeli military, descended upon the Palestinian town of Huwara. Under the Israeli military’s protection, settlers shot and killed 19 year-old Labib Damidi. This morning, settlers violently deprived Palestinians of the right to mourn Labib and attacked his funeral.
Following the Israeli military’s closure of the roads surrounding Huwara, over one hundred settlers rampaged through the town and destroyed houses, shops, and cars, in yet another escalation of the Israeli state’s colonial violence against Palestinians.
Jewish supremacist settlers enact these atrocities against Palestinians because they know it’s protected and encouraged by the Israeli government. Together, the Israeli military and settlers act as one entity to carry out the goal of Zionism: the complete and total ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land and the elimination of any resistance to it.
These pogroms are not limited to Huwara. This year, the number of attacks by the Israeli military and settlers acting in unison as an arm of the state have grown exponentially alongside the rapid development of illegal Israeli settlements.
Mass organized violence has been the Israeli state’s de facto tactic since 1948, when over 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed during the Nakba using the very same tactics we just saw in Huwara.
We unite against state-sponsored killing and ethnic cleansing. We demand an end to the U.S.’s continual funding of these atrocities. As violence against Palestinians escalates, it’s critical that we stand firmly in our anti-Zionism and resist the ongoing Nakba perpetuated and escalated by the Israeli state.
