Text/Image Parergon

Here is the first thematic “space” of KOKO – The Next Generation Journal, a Shared Campus publication.

Text/Image Parergon explores potentials and challenges in the relations of scriptorial and pictorial signs. How do text and image respectively frame an artefact? Does the combination of both constitute an extended value or merely a supplementary by-product that primarily appeals to the visual and other senses? Should such parerga be considered positively as added experiential benefit, or negatively as distractive embellishments of a core? Questions like these are explored in an initial set of academic “Conversations”, through the “Proceedings” of a dedicated conference and in image-with-text “Essays” by researchers working on and across the boundaries of scholarly research and creative production.

Conversations

Proceedings: Distancing – Contemporary Art in Reciprocity with Philosophy

Hosted on 16 May 2019 at the Kunstraum Kreuzlingen (CH) by the Zürich University of the Arts the symposium was set to explore the iconography of philosophical texts – in particular the imagery of Lady Philosophy as first introduced into philosophical tradition by the late antique writer Boethius (477–524) in his work The Consolation of Philosophy (approx. 524). The juxtaposition of medieval thinking, its articulation in illuminations, and in return their impact as challenge for contemporary creative practices, highlighted the need to investigate the mostly unquestioned principal opposition between immaterial thoughts and materialized images.

KOKO Editorial Statement

It is the ambition of KOKO to establish a lively and continuously evolving community of researchers contributing to respective topics; we therefore are always interested to receive feedback and/or potentially new contributions also to already existing “spaces”.
Where the more conventional formats have exhausted their possibilities, artists, designers and/or other creatives may use KOKO to create a metaphorical space for exchange through an externalised conversation between the researcher/creative practitioner and her subject.

macro (roma): lab for new imaginations _ open call

IT — Per due settimane, dal 4 al 17 settembre, avrà luogo la terza edizione del Lab for New Imaginations promosso dal Dipartimento per l’Educazione Preventiva del museo Macro. Si tratta di un progetto formativo che prevede una serie di incontri in presenza rivolti a un gruppo di artisti visivi e sonori, curatori, designers, ricercatori e scrittori emergenti residenti in Italia, che verranno selezionati attraverso una open call aperta fino all’11 giugno 2023. È l’occasione per questi giovani talenti di collaborare alla creazione di nuove idee, contenuti e progetti incoraggiando processi di auto-organizzazione volti alla creazione e realizzazione di un output editoriale collettivo. Ai partecipanti verranno offerti una serie di incontri con il team del museo e alcuni degli artisti coinvolti nel programma espositivo; verranno inoltre introdotti a curatori, artisti e progetti editoriali attivi sul territorio romano. Un laboratorio di sperimentazione per porre domande e idee che sfidano vari modelli di pratica curatoriale, artistica ed editoriale. Trovi tutte le info e le modalità di partecipazione qui.

EN — For two weeks, from 4 to 17 September, the third edition of the Lab for New Imaginations, conceived and promoted by the Department for Preventive Education of the Macro museum will take place. A training project that provides a series of in-person meetings aimed at a group of visual and sound artists, curators, designers, researchers and emerging writers residing in Italy, who will be select through an open call open until 11 June 2023. This is an opportunity for young talents to collaborate on the creation of new ideas, content and projects by encouraging processes of self-organization aimed at the creation and realization of a collective editorial output. Participants will be offered a series of meetings with the museum’s team and some of the artists involved in theexhibition programme; they will also be introduced to curators, artists and independent publishing projects active in Rome. It is an experimental workshop conceived to ask questions and drafy ideas that challenge various models of curatorial, artistic and publishing practices. “ecotono. metamorfosi dei confini”: a rho/milano dal 18 aprile

Dal 18 al 23 aprile 2023, all’interno della cornice del Salone del Mobile.Milano, ISIA Faenza partecipa al SaloneSatellite, fondato e curato da Marva Griffin per dare spazio ai designer under 35. L’istituto di formazione superiore faentino è presente tra le ventisette Scuole e Università del Design internazionali di questa 24° edizione con il progetto espositivo ECOTONO – metamorfosi dei confini.

Nell’ambito del tema di quest’anno, Design Schools – Universities / BUILDING THE (IM)POSSIBLE Process, Progress, Practice, l’ISIA di Faenza ha risposto alla domanda Design: DOVE VAI?, indagando l’ecotono, termine che definisce quell’ambiente di transizione tra due ecosistemi limitrofi che, in quanto “luogo di confine”, presenta una straordinaria biodiversità, complessità e ricchezza. Se è accertato che proprio in questa zona interstiziale – che favorisce scambio e condivisione – avvengono le trasformazioni più inaspettate e significative, il concetto si presta bene a diventare metafora della “scuola” come spazio di fermento e di incontro tra la sfera della formazione e il mondo del lavoro.
