Born in Buffalo, New York in 1950, Michael Basinski is an American poet, critic, and theorist. Much of his poetry participates in the traditions of visual and sound poetry. He is the curator emeritus of The Poetry Collection of the University Libraries at The State University of New York in Buffalo.

At start and locked into borrowed vocabularies, dictions, syntaxes, the whole trap of history, I neglected forward out of pure denial, that if a word came up through the mechanisms of selection and association, I would jump as far in the other direction as possible, I would JUMP out of the norm into its undeniable, associational, negational Other. Einem klassischen ästhetischen Modell zufolge formt der Künstler eine von ihm vorgefundene Materie, formt also die Natur zu Kunst, gibt der Materie Form. Die Skulptur folgt diesem Modell, aber auch die Poesie wird stets in einer solcher Perspektive gesehen. Denn was unterscheidet ein Gedicht von einem Nicht-Gedicht, die Poesie von dem, was nicht Poesie ist? Auch wenn in der Geschichte verschiedene Versuche, das Wesen der Poesie exakt zu bestimmen, sich nach und nach als unhaltbar herausgestellt haben, bleibt am Ende doch immer eine implizite Vorstellung von menschlicher Tätigkeit – der Gedanke, dass der Dichter auf irgendeine Weise die nicht poetische Materie organisiert und zu Poesie macht. Gustav Sjöberg geht in diesem poetischen Essay in Rückgriff auf Gedanken und Konzepte u. a. von Marsilio Ficino, Giordano Bruno, Dante Alighieri, Ernst Bloch der grundlegenden und auf Aristoteles zurückzuführenden Unterscheidung von Form und Materie nach sowie ihrem noch immer ungebrochenen Einfluss auf Begriffe wie »Kunst« und »Poesie«, die Sjöberg mit diesem Essay aus ihrem gedanklichen Käfig befreit.
