In Memory of Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar and His Nine Children Killed by the IDF

On May 23, 2025, an Israeli airstrike destroyed the family home of Drs. Hamdi al-Najjar and Alaa al-Najjar in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

Dr. Hamdi, a physician at Nasser Hospital, had just returned home after dropping off his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar—a pediatrician at the same hospital—for her work shift, when a bombardment struck their house and buried nine of their ten children alive:

Yahya (12), Rakan (10), Ruslan (7), Jubran (8), Eve (9), Rivan (5), Saydeen (3), Luqman (2), and Sidra (7 months).

Their bodies were later recovered from the rubble by Gaza Civil Defense teams (CNN, 2025; The Guardian, 2025a).

The only surviving child, Adam (11), sustained extremely severe injuries, including the amputation of one hand, severe burns, and multiple fractures.

Dr. Hamdi, for his part, was critically injured with brain and internal trauma, and died days later, on May 31, 2025 (BBC, 2025).

Dr. Alaa, who was working in the emergency department during the attack, was forced to face the devastating reality of seeing the remains of her own children arrive at the hospital.

Although this tragedy represents only one more episode in the intensification of the bombardment of Gaza throughout 2025, it remains a profoundly painful symbol of the suffering inflicted by Israel upon the Palestinian civilian population.
