Middle East Eye: “reframing the terminology of war”

“In light of Israel’s continued return of hundreds of Palestinian bodies who were killed under torture, blindfolded, restrained, bearing marks of abuse and fatal gunshots, many of them so mutilated that they were interred as unidentified, it has become essential to reopen the file of mass abductions, torture, and extrajudicial killings targeting Palestinians from Gaza. The scale and gravity of these violations require immediate investigation through all available legal, diplomatic, and humanitarian avenues to safeguard the tens of thousands whose fate remains unknown.

The disturbing images of Palestinian prisoners of war tortured to death were not the only scenes to shake Palestinians. Equally horrifying were the testimonies of civilian hostages recently released by Israeli authorities after establishing that they bore no affiliation to Palestinian resistance groups. These civilians describe harrowing abuse, severe torture, degrading treatment, humiliation, and assaults that violate their dignity, humanity, and personal honor, violations rendered even more acute within a conservative cultural context. The methods described reflect an extreme level of brutality, challenging the limits of human comprehension and constituting serious breaches of international humanitarian law.

The British newspaper The Guardian has disclosed the existence of an underground Israeli detention torture facility, while testimonies from civilians recently permitted to return to Gaza revealed the existence of additional similar sites. Israel continues to conceal thousands of civilians and combatants who disappeared from Gaza and its surrounding areas, withholding their identities, actual numbers, location, and fate. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Israel has denied all requests and blocked all attempts for access to visit them, an alarming sign of the opacity surrounding their safety.”

We demand the arrest, prosecution, and punishment of all of those who have perpetrated or are complicit in the genocide

Yesterday, the U.S. representative of The Hind Rajab Foundation, Jake Romm, presented at the final session of the Gaza Tribunal in Istanbul (23–26 October) — a people’s tribunal bringing together scholars, legal experts, civil society, activists, and students to create a record of and pass popular judgement on Israel’s in .

Romm stressed the need for states to undertake prosecutions in their national courts, stating:

“Action — by which I mean: the arrest, prosecution, and punishment of all of those who have perpetrated or are complicit in this genocide — and nothing less, is our demand. It is my sincere hope that, one day, these trials will take place in the courtrooms of a free Palestine, before Palestinian judges, before a Palestinian jury. That will be true justice. But until then, it is the legal obligation of every state in the world to prosecute the Israel genocidaires wherever they may be found.”

October 7th and what followed

src: Europe says OXI https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DuxpFZMCG/

On this day, 7 October 2023, after decades of ethnic cleansing, illegal occupation, and apartheid, armed Palestinians, led by Hamas, broke out of Gaza and attacked Israel.

Since 2007, Gaza had been subject to a blockade which destroyed its economy and left a million residents without enough food, while over 5000 were killed in Israeli attacks. Over 1500 Palestinians were also killed in the West Bank and Israel, and thousands of terrorist attacks by Israeli settlers took place.

During the October 7 assault, the Israeli army gave the Hannibal directive, instructing troops to kill Israelis in order to stop them being taken hostage. By the time the attack was over, at least 314 Israeli soldiers and 809 civilians were dead, with 252 taken hostage, with the intention of exchanging them for some of the 2500 Palestinian hostages held without charge in Israel.

Israel immediately attacked Gaza, with officials indicating clear genocidal intent. The defence minister called Palestinians “human animals” and said that energy, food and water would be cut off from civilians. The deputy Knesset speaker said Israel should be “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”, and the heritage minister said there were “no uninvolved civilians” so they should drop a nuclear bomb.

Since then, over 234,000 Gazans have been killed or wounded, with 48% of those killed being children; 40% under 10 years old. The dead include at least 248 journalists, 1722 health workers and 543 aid workers. With food cut off, a third of young children are malnourished, while hundreds of people have died of malnutrition. 90% of the population has been displaced, 92% of residential buildings destroyed, along with every university, and 90% of schools and 94% of hospitals have been damaged or destroyed.

Most reputable human rights bodies now consider that Israel is engaged in genocide, including the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, Physicians for Human Rights Israel, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, and many more.
